Fahrenheit 451 Project
Background & Rationale
In this unit the class read two different dystopian books; Fahrenheit 451 or Lord of the Flies. Being a honor student I was required to read Fahrenheit 451 and create both a journal and a scrapbook based of the book. For the scrapbook I made one page for each of the intelligent characters in the book. For the journal I made a diary from one character's point of view. We did this unit to learn more about utopias and dystopias.

Common Core State Standards
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the
text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail
its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and
refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.3 Analyze how complex characters develop over the course of a text,
interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.
I met these standards by using quotes in my scrapbook that explained each character and who that person was. By creating a scrapbook I was able to show how the person acted and thought. This helped to create an idea about how they acted throughout the book. When I did my journal I made it in Clarisse's point of view. I met the standards by showing how Clarisse grew throughout the book and showing her feelings.
Reflection
During this project I learned how to analyze characters better. I needed to go through the text to find the quotes that best described each character and had to describe themes in the book. In the beginning of the unit I didn't really understand what a utopian or dystopian society was or how to explain it. After reading Fahrenheit 451 and hearing about the other book I am able to explain it more clearly. Something I struggled with during this project was trying to "become" Clarisse and write a journal entry as her. She was a very interesting character and I had a hard time getting into her mindset. Something that was easier about this project was creating the actual scrapbook. I enjoyed printing out the different pictures and quotes and making the scrapbook look nice. I really liked the speed dating way of sharing our projects because I could talk to many different people one in one and listen to their projects effectively.
