Speaking & Listening
Background & Rationale
I took part in Socratic Seminars for three different books in the second semester, including The Good Earth, Fahrenheit 451, and Night to display my speaking and listening skills. In this unit we were trying to create a meaningful conversation about what we have read about by using quotes. Each student brought a few quotes and questions to add to the group discussion and we all took turns sharing our thoughts and commenting on each others ideas.

Common Core State Standards
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.1 Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative
discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics,
texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.1a Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched
material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and
other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
I met the standards by participating in every conversation and explaining my thoughts. I was able to explain my quotes and ask my questions in a way that people understand and could respond to. I also came to every class prepared with my thoughtful questions and quotes that referred to the books.
Reflection
During this unit I learned how to be part of a meaningful conversation and about other people's ideas. I was able to listen how other people felt about what we read and was able to react to it. I had a hard time with the "Engaging, responding to others" portion of this project. Something that was easier for me was using quotes and reflecting on them. I was able to explain my quotes and why they were important during every conversation. Also, making connections was something that was easier for me. I like to be able to connect my life and the things around me to the stuff I read because it makes it more enjoyable.
