Narrative
Background & Rationale
In this unit we were reading the book The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. We were trying to study modern and ancient China, and this book was about a family living in china many years ago. However, we were not able to read the entire book. After reading about one-third we were asked to create an alternate ending based on how we thought the book should or would end. We could make it end any way that we wanted as long as it followed the storyline.

Common Core State Standards
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.3 Write narratives to develop real experiences or events using
effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.3a Engage and orient the reader by setting out a problem, situation,
or observation, establishing one or multiple point(s) of view, and introducing a narrator and/or
characters; create a smooth progression of experiences or events.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.3b Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description,
reflection, and multiple plot lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.3c Use a variety of techniques to sequence events so that they build
on one another to create a coherent whole.
I met these standards because I included many details to go along with the story and the characters that were created. All of the events I wrote about went along with the story and happened in the order they should've. In my narrative I created a problem that the characters needed to deal with and made it interesting to the reader. Throughout my narrative I created dialogue between the characters and descriptions of the situation. I also made sure that the events followed each other in a way that it would make sense to the reader.
Reflection
In this unit I learned a lot of things about China that I never knew before. We learned a lot about the culture and how it is different from our own. For example, something I never really knew or thought about was the gender roles. After reading The Good Earth I realized how privileged the males were and how hard it was to be a girl. While boys were celebrated, girls were made into slaves and not cared for the way the sons were. While doing this assignment I had to do something that I have never done before, create a story with the characters, a plot, and a writing style already chosen for me. While this made that aspect of it easier, it was hard to follow that kind of writing and continue on with the story. Because the novel was halfway done I could be creative, but I still needed to follow the storyline. Something that I found easy in this assignment was creating a scene by including many details and conversations.
